Sales tax on a USA penny coin purchase
I have purchased many coins on ebay and have never paid sales tax. I placed two orders yesterday, one for a graded 2025 USA penny and another for two rolls of 2025 USA pennies. For the rolls, there was no sales tax. But, for the graded coin, there was tax charged. I contacted the Seller who said that ebay is responsible for tax charges. I have spent an hour on the ebay website trying to find a way to contact a human. I do not think that it is possible.

OP1 year agoI contacted the Seller and he said that he listed the penny correctly and it was eBay that charged/collected the tax. I am a long time coin buyer on eBay. I have never been charged tax on a coin. But, I see no positive solution for me. What disappoints me most is that a customer cannot ask eBay a question.

Mentor1 year agoSales tax depends on several factors. First is the laws of the State the item is being shipped to. Second is the category the item is listed in. Some sellers will not list their items in the correct category so sales tax may be charged. So although the item itself may be exempt from sales tax if the seller lists the item in a category that charges sales tax then the sales tax will be charged to the buyer. Customer service cannot remove sales tax charged if the seller chose to list in the wrong category. Each State will have a policy on how to recover sales tax that was paid in error so check with your State.
