Rural Shipping
I sold an item for $12 and set shipping at $7.00 paid by buyer (a reasonable price I estimated from the USPS website). My problem is that buyer lives on a rural Route and thus USPS shipping is $40, way higher than I anticipated.
I am in the process of cancelling the transaction unless buyer has another address (I am waiting answer). Thoughts on what to do ?

Send the item, take the loss, learn from the situation.
Never guess at shipping. If you’re doing flat rate shipping, charge what it will cost to ship to Alaska. I’m going out on a limb, but when you got the estimate from USPS, the estimate given was probably to ship to your own zip code.
If you cancel, it would be ‘out of stock’ as the reason, because this was your error. Cancelling will give you a defect, the customer can leave negative (and report you for asking for more money after the sale) and you don’t get your fees back.
I would also suggest you go and look at all your listings and make sure shipping is correct.
If it’s $40 to ship rulers, that trolling motor may not have enough, either.

OP1 year agoThank you, Rockstar. I may take the loss on this one. I estimated shipping to Maine (from Arkansas). Alaska is a better conservative assumption but may run buyers off. Safest thing to do is buyer pays shipping.

·1 year agoBeing rural should have no effect on a USPS delivery.
There is no way that the ruler would need $40 to mail!
