Returning a fake-not as described-defective product back to China
I purchased a 4TB SATA SSD from a Chinese seller. The package arrived and noticed right away that the packaging said 2TB. I contacted the sender and they initially tried to convince me to keep the drive and they would give me a bit of a refund. After checking out the drive it was obviously a fake and completely defective. After a few days of posting screenshots of the defective unit (would not initialize or format) the seller agreed to return it.
At first the seller offered no payment for shipping. They just sent me an address in chat and said send it back. I got Ebay involved and the seller contacted me offering to pay shipping if I get a shipping quote and giving them my PayPal address to pay me for the cost. I understand that this is probably how things need to happen since they can't offer me a return label.
A couple questions/comments.
1) How do I know they address they are giving me is actually their legitimate address. What is keeping them from giving me some other address that doesn't match their eBay account and saying I never returned it.
2) Why do they want me to send back an obvious fake and defective item. After the fact I now see a bunch of Chinese seller trying to sell these things. Search NEW 1TB 2TB 4TB SSD 2.5'' SATA III Internal Solid State Drive PC/MAC 560MB/s US. All the drives that say 870 EVO from China are fake and trying to trick buyers into thinking they are a Samsung product. Mine would not format, but others are commenting they hold nowhere near what they advertised. My gut is that they are hoping I throw up my hands and eat the $150 loss.
3) What should I do from here? Run to the post office and get a quote? Ship back to the address they provided? Contact Ebay again and reference my case saying I'm not comfortable shipping international? Obviously the item is worthless but something here seems fishier than the item they sent.
