Return was mistakenly labeled as delivered, when it was just scanned at post office

Hi, I have a return that was dropped off in PA on 2 Sep and departed post office on 3 Sep at 2:04 am.
Then it says it was DELIVERED in AZ 14 hours later.
It got mistakenly marked as delivered, when it was just supposed to have another Post Office Scan.
However, now that it says it was delivered in my mailbox, Ebay expects me to refund the buyer by today.
Post Office here in AZ told me they had not received a package and it must still be on its way from PA.
What can I do? Should I just refund anyways, even if I dont have the package, just to protect my seller status? Thanks for any info, I read its not uncommon, yet there is no info on how to handle this without getting a ding from ebay (and forfeiting fees)

OP3 weeks agoThanks for your reply. I have refunded the buyer because I didn't know what else to do.
The tracking has not changed. I filled out a form online with USPS and got a voice mail back saying that it was not delivered here (or received in our city) and "must be still on it's way from PA, because it was definitely erroneously scanned". They advised to wait and see if it arrives and "give it 30 days"... if it doesn't arrive then file a missing parcel claim. I just assumed there would be more information out there on how to handle this type of mistake by the post office so ebay gives us more grace in this very obvious error.

You avoided a defect by refunding, so that's good.
I would sign up for tracking updates from USPS, and as soon as I could I would file an insurance claim.
You may need to file in person since the tracking shows delivered and the system will decline the claim.

OP3 weeks agoHi eastlaneave! I received the package today! I saw the mailman scan it after delivery, but there is absolutely no update on the tracking online. Still shows delivered on 3 Sept. I was wondering if it would show up as delivered twice, but it didn't. Anyways, it arrived safe and sound after all. Thanks for your help!
