Return request from buyer
A buyer is requesting a return and refund for an item that sold 8 months ago. The transaction is so old it doesn’t allow a return through the original listing. The buyer said eBay told them to have me send a shipping label (outside of eBay) and they will return the item. Once returned, the buyer said eBay told them to have me refund the funds through their personal PayPal account. This doesn’t seem legitimate to me and I wonder am I obligated to oblige.

No, you are not obligated to accommodate a return for a transaction that old. Of course the decision would be based on the reason for the return and how you perform customer service.
If you do decide to take the return, you cannot do it through eBay. You could either create a return label outside of eBay (if you want to pay for the return shipping) or just give the buyer your return address and she can purchase her own postage. Once received, you would have to refund outside of eBay. If you both have PayPal accounts, that would be the easiest option.
