I have a buyer that claims their item was damaged in transit. It's a common item of electronics and it has a serial and model number on the back, which I asked them to send me to confirm it's the item damaged. They have not been willing/able to do this after about a week after the claim for return. I opened a case with UPS to get the insurance to cover it. I also note that the buyer has stated that the package did not come damaged. I packed the item myself so I know it was well packed and the type of damage looks like someone took a hard object and cracked it open, something not likely with an undamaged package. I am concerned that they might have purchased a duplicate item from me and are trying to scam the system by claiming a refund when it's the original owned product that is damaged. Just a suspicion. Still waiting to hear from the carrier and the client with the picture of the reverse side of the item. Anyone with a similar experience or advice to give?

Mentor4 months ago@pineflatpeter I understand that this is frustrating.
A no return policy doesn't mean no refunds. Keep in mind that your return policy is only for buyers remorse returns.... changed mind doesn't fit, etc. The eBay Money Back Guarantee overrules your returns policy.
If the buyer files a refund request SAYING that the item is not as described then you need to accept the return and issue the return shipping label.
If you do not accept the return willingly then the buyer can ask eBay to step in and force a refund. You do not get your seller's fees back, you get a defect and the buyer may be allowed to keep the item.
If the buyer abuses the eBay MBG in some way then you can report them but it doesn't get your money back:

Sellers have protection for return abuse if they offer FREE RETURN shipping on their listings OR if they are a Top Rated seller and offer 30 days or greater returns. The seller can then reduce the refund amount by up to 50% if the buyer sends a different item or somehow reduces the value of the item.
