What happens if I do not respond to a return request from a buyer by the deadline date?

The buyer can ask eBay to step in if the deadline has passed. Generally eBay will assume you do not want the item returned and let the buyer keep it, plus refund the buyer from your funds (unless the item is quite expensive).
Then you also get an unresolved case in your performance.
