Return closed.
The seller has refunded me and the return is closed. Does that mean the defective product does not need to be returned? The return shipping label originally created is also no longer there.

The refund closed your return. An experienced seller understands that the item will not be returned once the refund is issued, but new sellers do not understand this.
If your seller is somewhat new, I would send him and message and just confirm that he does not want the item returned. If he does want it returned, he has to create a return label outside of eBay and send it to you in a message.
