Request to Extend Return Shipping Deadline – Item Still in Transit
Summary: gu.ihid.k3qn8bwt requested an extension for the return deadline of an item still in transit from China. They were unable to initiate a return by September 23 due to the item not being delivered yet. mudshark61369 questioned the reason for the early return request, advising gu.ihid.k3qn8bwt to review eBay’s policies. gu.ihid.k3qn8bwt clarified their reason for return and later mentioned they had successfully messaged eBay to extend the deadline, feeling that the initial guidance they received was not legally applicable in Europe.
I live in Germany.
I requested a return for an item, and the automated return instructions state I must ship the item back by September 23. However, this item was shipped from China and is currently still in transit. The estimated delivery date is not until September 28 at the earliest.
There is no button in the request or order or return detail pages that says get ebay to step in. I contacted the seller but didn't get an answer.
Because the item has not physically arrived, I cannot generate tracking or post it back by the September 23 deadline. I wish that eBay extend the return shipping deadline until after the item arrives so I can properly return it for a refund.
Tracking shows the package is still on its way to me.

Why would you request a return for an item that is currently in transit and you have not received it yet? Did you want to cancel the transaction? If you did, you cannot request a cancellation once an item has been shipped. You may want to read the terms and time frames for using ebay's Money Back Guarantee (eBay-Käuferschutz) in the link below.

Reason for return is "Ordered the wrong item".

OP2 weeks agoI could message ebay regarding this topic and the return deadline was extended as I requested. The "correct answer" was not marked by me. I wouldn't consider it correct or relevant to the law in Europe.

Mentor2 weeks agoHi @gu.ihid.k3qn8bwt
You should not open a return until you receive the item. Even with an extension, if you don't receive the item, you can't return it and you won't get a refund.
Since your item was already shipped, the correct step would be to wait until the day after the estimated delivery window and then open an Item Not Received case.
The answer you received from @mudshark61369 was correct.
