Removing an auction Item with NO bids

I have been selling numerous years, always Buy It Now. I recently tried to do an Auction and it got no bids. It has automatically renewed or relisted 3 times now, giving me no chance to stop it.
If I go in and say to cancel the auction, it tells me that "bidders may be upset" or "there will be fees up to the percentage of the value"?? There are several 'watchers' yes, but no one has ever bid. Obviously I wouldn't want to cancel it if there are active bidders.
I just want to take it down and list the item individually as a BIN. I am assuming the fees are only if there is active bidding, but want to make sure before being hit with a big fee. Any help? FYI, the start is $300.
