Narrative for Posting: Unreturned Merchandise After Refund
In recent months, I have encountered a serious issue as a seller on eBay that highlights a major gap in the platform’s ability to protect sellers. A buyer purchased an item from me (a high-value cue), then filed a chargeback through their credit card company instead of working through eBay’s Resolution Center. The chargeback was granted, resulting in a full refund being issued outside of eBay.
Despite receiving this full refund, the buyer has refused to return the merchandise, even after I provided a certified, prepaid shipping label that was delivered and signed for. This situation means the buyer now has both the item and the money, leaving me with no product and no compensation.
When I contacted eBay for assistance, I was informed that they could not intervene because the refund was issued outside of their platform. This essentially leaves sellers vulnerable to buyers who can bypass eBay’s own dispute system, exploit credit card chargebacks, and refuse to return merchandise.
Sellers are encouraged to trust eBay’s system for transactions and dispute resolution, but when cases like this arise, we are left without meaningful support or recourse through eBay. This situation raises serious concerns about eBay’s ability—or willingness—to help sellers recover their merchandise when the buyer has acted in bad faith.
I am sharing this experience to raise awareness among fellow sellers: be extremely cautious when dealing with buyers who attempt to sidestep eBay’s Resolution Center. Once the chargeback process is outside of eBay, it becomes nearly impossible to recover your item unless you pursue legal action independently.

Mentor1 year agoSorry this happened to you. Unfortunately once the buyer went through their credit card company with a charge back eBay no longer has any say in the decision. Although eBay did charge you a $20 fee for having to handle the charge back they have no say in the decision as the buyers bank decides the outcome. Also, with a charge back the bank usually does not require the item be returned.
There is little that eBay can do about this as they are bound by banking regulations when a charge back is filed.
