Refunding seller-paid shipping cost for sold item that arrived damaged.
I listed an item for sale. The list price included free shipping. A buyer bought the item. It arrived damaged. I refunded the buyer and told buyer to keep the item. Shouldn't I get refunded for the shipping I paid ebay?

No, eBay had nothing to do with the damaged shipment. Assuming you insured the shipment then you need to ask the Buyer to hang on to the damaged package and item plus ask them to send pictures of the damaged package showing the label as well as the damaged item.
You can file an insurance claim and the carrier may want to see the package and item so the Buyer will have to cooperate.
