Refunding a buyer even after the case closed
Summary: redeemedcollectives shared a situation where they sold a shirt that a buyer claimed was not as described because they expected a different color. The buyer returned the item after the return case was closed by eBay, who initially advised redeemedcollectives they didn't need to take further action. However, the buyer appealed and won, leading eBay to reverse their initial decision and refund the buyer. comics-scifi-collectibles suggested issuing a refund upon receiving the item back to avoid such outcomes, but redeemedcollectives responded that they appealed and eventually eBay reversed the decision in their favor.
Hello, I recently sold a shirt where the buyer requested a return because he says he thought the shirt was going to be brown, when the description clearly says gray in the title, item specifics, and description. He filed the return under item not as described. I promptly issued a return label. The time frame for him to return the item came and went, so eBay closed the case. Then, after this, he mailed it back to me. I immediately called eBay to ask what I should do and was told that I didn't need to do anything since the case was already closed and that if the buyer should reach out to me that I should just have him contact eBay and they would explain to him why he would not be receiving a refund. Fast forward a couple of days after I receive the package back and I see that he appealed the case and won, with eBay issuing him a refund, taking the money out of our account because, they say, we failed to issue him a refund. How is it possible that this can happen?

Mentor1 week ago@redeemedcollectives I understand that this is frustrating.
Once you got the item back, even though the case was closed, you should have willingly issued a refund from the sold item if you could not do so from the case. This is because a buyer can APPEAL a closed case and then eBay rules in their favor which is what it sounds like happened.

OP1 week agoThe problem is that there is nothing that can be done once the case is closed. I did appeal it and eBay reversed their decision, ruling in my favor afterall.

Mentor1 week ago@redeemedcollectives Glad that eBay reversed their decision. You can refund from the drop down menu next to the sold item even after a case is closed.
The buyer can still go to their payment method and file a chargeback. If they do that then you also may receive a $20 dispute fee.
