Refund Customer or Cancel Order
I just saw a reseller on fakebook giving advice about out of stock. He said to just refund the customer in full instead of cancelling the order (we all know how that goes with defects).
Good advice or bad advice?
I never thought to do that.

Mentor4 months agoWhen you make the refund or cancellation you must give a reason from the short list of available reasons. Since you were out of stock you need to use that reason which will give you a defect on your account. If you choose one of the other reasons and eBay catches you then you will receive a defect and possible suspension.

OP4 months agoYeah, I don't know why he is giving that kind of advice then. I think there is an option at the end that says other, but you have to explain it in the comments. I give refunds all the time for shipping, expired offers that customers missed. I had never heard anyone recommend this before so I thought it would be prudent to ask.
Thanks.

I have read that issuing a full refund marks it as a seller cancellation with the same defect. This was from a seller that said he mistakenly used this method for refunds when the buyer sent a message requesting cancellation. I have not seen this defined in any policy, but I assume eBay would be aware of this choice and would want to close the door on avoiding a cancellation defect.
The refund function is meant for partial refunds/adjustments.

OP4 months agoMakes sense. Unfortunately I doubt I will be able to find that guy again to refute what he said (you know how scrolling goes). Thanks. I figured it would still show as a defect somehow or way.
