Refund Advice
I am fairly new to selling on Ebay so I would love to get some advice from experienced sellers. I have a buyer who stated the item I sold does not work. I sent my apologies and requested them to start the refund process. Here is where I am concerned as a seller. How do I know the individual did not switch out parts or do something to make the item not work? I explained in my description that the items were from a pallet sale and opened to ensure all parts were included. I did not test the product as I wanted to stay true to the open box condition description. Again, I have no problem with refunding the buyer. I am concerned as a seller how to protect myself from individuals who may try and manipulate the item or sale.

Unless you're psychic, you don't. Would you do what you are suspecting of your buyer? The answer is probably no, just as with most people. Are there dishonest people out there. Sure, a small percentage of the population is dishonest all around us - not just on eBay. There is no way to be completely safe from scammers.
Since you don't know if the item ever worked, you have even less reason to imagine dishonest motives. Regardless, your inclination to handle the return professionally is the right one.
