received unsolicited shipment
I received an item which I did not order and there have been no charges to my account. I can't get past ebay's virtual assistant, who does not understand proper English. The item is worth less than $50, so I am reluctant to spend much time or money on it. It looks as if it might be an incorrect return, but there is little information included, Should I just trash the package and ignore the issue?

How do you know how much the item is worth if you did not purchase it?

OP9 months agoThe item was addressed specifically to me, so I opened it. It appears to be a return to an unknown seller because there is a return number enclosed inside. I have never been an ebay seller so I don't know how that works, but somehow the buyer apparently somehow got a return address label printed with my name and address instead of that of the seller. I still have no clue who that might be. So I would have to re-wrap the package, return it to USPS, marked "return to sender"? Will they even accept it for return if it has obviously been opened?
By the way, I only know the value because I queried ebay about the items I could see in the unwrapped package. I opened the package because it was addressed to me and because I have received Christmas packages before from people who did not warn me they had ordered something to be shipped directly to me.
So, I'm unsure how to proceed here. The easy way is to trash the items and forget I received them. The other way involves some effort on my part. I do not feel any obligation to pay out-of-pocket for any additional shipping charges, since I did not order the items, I do not know the buyer who shipped them, and as far as I can see, I am a completely innocent bystander. The error here HAS TO HAVE BEEN ON THE BUYER, OR ON THE ORIGINAL SELLER. At any rate, I don't appreciate the very real fact that another ebay buyer somehow acquired my personal mailing address, even though I AM NOT AN EBAY SELLER! I am seriously considering erasing myself from the ebay system!
Thank you for listening to my indignant rant! What should I do?

It's not a good sign when someone is using your name & address for eBay returns - worst case it can mean another "seller" has stolen your SSN and is using your data for selling.
I don't want to be too alarmist, but every Feb/Mar unsuspecting members post here about receiving surprise 1099-Ks for selling $20K+ that they had nothing to do with. That's how they find out their ID was hacked.
You can't return a package that is already open - and you need to hold on to it and the label for eBay to find out who is using your address and take action against them - they can trace that easily from the return codes on the label.
If you use social media the best option is to photo the label & package and attach them to a Private message to eBay teams there.
