I purchased an item now the seller is asking me to cancel the order so they can modify something on it and then will send me a link to repurchase. Is that normal for people to ask? Do I get penalized for that?

Do not request a cancellation of your order.
If the seller needs to revise something, THEY will need to cancel the transaction.
