Purchased item with a gift card may need refund

I purchased an item with a gift card and it was sent for authentication. It has been stuck in authentication for 3 weeks. I contacted the seller, they mentioned that the thought the slab could have been opened. In the meantime my wife threw away the old gift cards. I am kind of stuck. I cant get a refund because I no longer have the gift cards but the item isnt moving in authentication and ebay hasn't reached out despite the seller saying they would contact us in 24 hours. The last time I was refunded for a purchase made using an eBay gift card, the refund amount appeared as a line item at checkout with a box to check to apply the amount to a future purchase. You should not need the physical gift card, nor should you need to enter the card code -- just check a box.

Authentication complicates things a bit, but if there is no tracking showing delivery by the day after the last estimated delivery date you should still be able to open an "item not received" case with eBay, and ask eBay to step three business days later (up to twenty one business days from starting the case).
