Promoted or organic
How do I know if my item was sold organically or through a promoted ad after the sale. And how do I know if eBay just said it was sold through a promoted ad so they can charge the promotion fee?

Check the transaction details, on the right is a breakdown of the financial details on the sold item.

The short answer is that you don't other than understanding how Promoted listings actually work with the 30 day click attribute and now the function that if a Buyer finds one of your items through a Promoted listing and buys other things from you the PL ad rates will apply to those purchases.
I abandoned PLS (Promoted listing Standard - now referred to as General or something like that) at the end of 2023. I rely on organic sales and am happy not to be paying any more in fees than the basic category Final Value Fees on my sales. Some advice to Sellers has been given on how to offset PL ad cost by raising the item price to offset the fees. To me that is a big game.
