Problems editing photos that have been uploaded to a listing on my laptop.

I cannot edit the photos that I have uploaded to my listings on my laptop. This has happened within the last 3 months. The editing icons no longer appear when I hover the cursor over the image. Is my software out of date? How do I update it?
