problem getting a refund
I decided to return a book as it didn't look as good as the photos. I informed the seller who resisted, saying there was a lot of "scamming" on ebay. I replied that I didn't know anything about that and gave her details of why I was returning and she agreed to take it back. I went to the PO 8/08and mailed it back and gave her the tracking. When I saw it arrived back on 8/12 (within her 14 day return,) I waited a few days and then asked where the refund was. I never had a problem before. She just replied I had to return it "via ebay" (didn't mention she had received anything) so I looked that up and see that now (I haven't returned anything in a few years) there is a "return request" procedure and they give you a return label. I'd already paid over $9 for the return shipping. So I asked her if I sent her a carton (empty since I'd already returned the item) with the official ebay return label if she'd finally give me the refund. Then for the first time she admitted she'd gotten it back but now claimed it wasn't the book she'd sent me. I don't know what to do at this point.

Tell the seller you will be phoning your credit card company tomorrow to do a chargeback ... that you will provide them with the tracking number (and eBay messages) to prove that you followed instructions in getting the item back to the seller.
If the seller is smart ... she'll click the 'refund' button to avoid the extra $20 charge of a chargeback.
[In reality, you can file the 'return request' with eBay ... and provide the tracking number showing the package was delivered back to the seller ... if you are still within 30 days of receiving the book AND you choose 'Doesn't match descriptions or photos' as the reason for filing the request.]
Do whichever feels right to you. If you start with filing the return request with eBay ... you will still be able to utilize your CC company should the eBay dispute go south for some reason. Good luck!

OP2 years agoThanks so much, I did file the reply request but as I said I'd already paid $9 to ship it back, and would have to pay more (deducted from the return amount) Supposedly I have til the 29th to use the return label. But I think rec'd the book on the 26th so if you say there is a 30 day limit I don't have much time. I'll call my cc company and see what they say. There is also ebays "money back guarantee but don't know how that works. This is al so depressing, I never had a problem with a return from ebay before.
