Post office possibly lost package.
Hi, I have an item that shipped and updated in shipping but hasn't moved in about a week and the buyer is asking for a refund. If I give a refund now, will I get it back if it updates as delivered?
Am I better off to refund or update tracking on shipping?
Thanks

"Am I better off to refund or update tracking on shipping"?
If you did not purchase you shipping label through ebay, which automatically uploads a tracking number to a listing. You have to manually do that so ebay knows you shipped on time, and the buyer can track the package. Do it ASAP.
If you do have tracking uploaded, On the USPS tracking it should say at what facility the last update took place at. example below
If there is not another update above that or an "In Transit to Next Facility" Call the USPS customer service phone number, You can look it up online, Have your tracking number at hand and ask the rep to start a missing package search at the last facility. Write down the claim number they give you.
Because there have been many storms in various parts of the country that have caused flooding or wind damage you may want to do a search online Example: "Have there been severe storms in San Jose, Ca. recently".
"the buyer is asking for a refund. If I give a refund now, will I get it back if it updates as delivered"?
Respond to your customer saying you have filed a missing package claim with the USPS and give them the claim number so they can check the results. If there were storms near the last facility tell them that as well. Do Not refund the buyer, or if they eventually do receive the item, they will not be able to refund you.
If your buyer files an item not received dispute and there is tracking showing that the USPS has the item, ebay will extend the usual 3 day time frame for the buyer to ask them to step in.

OP2 weeks agoI did purchase the shipping through ebay. It was shipped on time.
The buyer has reported the item has not been received. I have option to update shipping or refund.
Just don't want to get dinged for not responding.

-DO NOT REFUND unless the Buyer files a claim through eBay that they did not get their item by the estimated delivery date. If they do you refund them through the claim.
-Immediately file a Missing Mail pice on the USPS site, that can shake things loose
-If you print your labels through eBay and ship within your handling time you have some protection as explained below but if you refund without the claim you have no chance of getting your money back if the package eventually delivered:
If the following criteria is met eBay will reimburse you if the package is eventually delivered after you have refunded a Buyer through an eBay claim that they did not receive their package AND delivery is confirmed through tracking on eBay. eBay launched this new Seller protection in late 2025.
1. Seller prints the shipping label through eBay
2. Seller ships and gets a carrier scan within their Handling time
3. Buyer files a claim through eBay that they did not receive their package AND the Seller refunds the Buyer through the eBay claim
