Possible fake item.
I ordered a MontBlanc Pen from a vendor. He sent it without certification. The pen maybe OK. Do I contact the seller directly, or must I work through ebay? I tried to explain it to ebay, but their program automatically assumes I'm returning it. but I can't seem to explain this to ebay without sending it back first. Must I handle this via ebay, or can I contact the vendor via ebay site directly to try to solve the problem?

Mentor3 years agoHi @davilon38 If you're having doubts, open a Return. A pen isn't the deluxe graduation present it once was. There are very few "wet" signatures in the legal profession anymore. Everything is email or signed electronically. If she's a recent law school grad with student loans, she might appreciate a nice cash gift inside a loving card a lot more. Good luck!

I copied the following from the MontBlanc guarantee. I expected something like this, almost all guarantees require similar. As already advised, few eBay sellers are authorized dealers.
In order to obtain service through this Montblanc International Guarantee, the returned Montblanc Product must be accompanied by the original Guarantee Certificate that was included with the Montblanc Product at the time of purchase, duly completed, dated, stamped and signed by an authorised Montblanc boutique or Montblanc dealer.
The guarantee goes on to list the "Not Covered" conditions. There are the usual exceptions, but you specifically mentioned serial number, so I copied this item.
Montblanc Products where the serial number has been removed or is not clearly legible, or where any part of the original Montblanc Product has been removed, changed, altered, replaced, erased or defaced.

Mentor3 years agoYou must decide if you want to return it. If yes, then open a return request as not as described.
If you just want to ask the seller a question, use the contact seller link in your purchase history. What do you expect him to say, though? If not authentic, I doubt that he will tell you, even if he knows.

OP3 years agoThanks for getting back. The pen looks marvelous. There should be PIX and registered symbols on the underside of the clip. But the big issue is there was no serial # on the box or on the enclosed Guarantee Certificate. He didn't stamp that as an authorized retailer, nor did he enter the serial # and sign it. That leads me to believe that although the pen is close to perfect, he's just selling fakes. I really don't want to give this to a recent law graduate and have Montblonc deny service should she have trouble some day. From what you are saying, he's better of taking it back than having trouble with MB, right?

Mentor3 years agoI do not know how aggressively MB pursues counterfeits. I can see that they are not a member of the VeRO program to easily request removal of suspect items.
It is possible that it is not a fake - there is probably a 'gray market' for these - where an authorized retailer sells some stock at a discount to keep his volume up. It is common with watches. So the item could be genuine, but the the seller is not an authorized retailer. Most sellers on eBay are not authorized retailers of the product. But the lack of a serial # seems suspect to me.
If you open a not as described return, the seller must accept your return or issue a refund without return. So trouble with MB is probably not something he will consider.
