Please help with a return! Due date is 8/23. Conflicting info received from 2 different ebay assoc
Hi - hoping someone can help me. I sold a high end duvet cover to a buyer and when she received it she stated that it rained and stained and damaged the product as it sat outside.. she was looking to me for compensation. Later in the day she opened a return. I received the item back, it was stained, wet, rolled in a ball and shoved in a small bag. Needless to say, the $175 item is worthless to me.
First I was told to formally report the buyer, which I did, and then wait for ebay to get in touch with me about. the return. That didnt seem right to me so I called back and a different associate told me to pay the buyer all her money back and then file an appeal???? That doesnt seem right either.
I'm a newer seller and I just got top rated last month. I dont want to ruin this so I'll do whatever I have to in order to protect my status. This has happened more than once to me and I've never been compensated for my damages.
can anyone help me? This is time sensitive as I need to reimburse her, if I am going to, by 8/23.
thanks very much.

The Buyer returned the item in a different condition then you shipped it to them in. Here is a link to your Seller Protections. Depending on the circumstances you can withhold up to 50% of the original sale price and the Buyer's original shipping. Seller protections | eBay
This process lets you cut your loss and while the damage was the fault of the Buyer and not the carrier or you there is not much you can do. I believe you can deduct the remainder of the loss on your income tax return.
You Reported the Buyer, that's great. You can add them to your Blocked list on this page and be done with them ...make sure you toggle the two items at the bottom to block all communication from them and to apply your block settings to active and future listings. Buyer Management | eBay
Process the refund through the return claim today, your account will not be affected with a strike in this scenario. However, check your Return rate to make sure you are above the requirements for that Seller metric: Seller Dashboard | eBay
Rating is done on the 20th of each month and any changes go into effect on the 20th of the following month.
