got to charge more for shipping than you would expect to pay since ebay takes their fees from the complete purchase, including shipping, if we charge the exact amount we pay, we take a loss in shipping, and profits. the system is not fair

You need to account for the fees on the shipping in your total selling price, but there are several ways to do it.
You can increase your item selling price. You can add a handling charge if you use calculated shipping. Or you can choose to charge your buyers the retail rates or offer less of a discount on the shipping - you do not have to charge them exactly what you pay.
