Paying sales tax on bullion
I have bought a ton of bullion (specially Libertad) on ebay and especially here in the state of Florida:
As of August 1, 2025, sales of all qualifying gold, silver, and platinum bullion, including Libertads and other eligible coins, are fully exempt from sales tax in Florida, regardless of the purchase amount. Eligible foreign bullion coins, such as Mexican Libertads, that meet the purity standards and are considered investment-grade are also exempt under this expanded rule.
The majority of my purchases are correct with no sales tax applied. But now it seems like appx 20-30% of my buys have sales tax applied and I have 2 buys that I have not concluded as sales tax is inappropriately applied. And contacting ebay support is impossible. What do I do? I need to conclude my buys but do I pay the sales tax and then how do I get it back? Buying now on eBay has been a real pain lately as I’m talking about large purchases. HELP

OP8 months agoThis is the best answer. I now check the category to see if it will be taxed or not. I have even had some sellers informed that they placed their bullion in the wrong category and sales tax will be charged and many of us, including me will avoid their sale. By simply changing the category then no sales tax is paid and the item is made more attractive to more buyers. Great answer. Thanks!!!

OP9 months agoBut a lot of my buys are snipes at the end of the auction. The sales tax is only applied when the auction ends so I never know if I’m going to be charged sales tax or not. Is there a way to get credit back from ebay for sales tax erroneously paid? Again, 2/3 -3/4 of my buys are fine but up to 1/3 of my buys have sales tax and you don’t know whether it’s applied until after the auction ends!! HELP!!! Did I say ebay support really sux? HELP!!!!

Mentor9 months agoCheck the category before you snipe. See if there are similar BIN items in the category, and whether sales tax is applied to those items if you place one of those items in your cart and go to checkout. After a few times you should learn which categories are exempt and which are taxed.

Not from eBay; sales tax collected by eBay is turned over to your state. Theoretically you could report the overpayment when filing your state taxes, but that is not something I would recommend doing.

Mentor9 months agoWhether an item is subject to sales tax depends both on the law in the state the item is being shipped to, but also on the category the item is listed in. If a seller lists a non-taxable item in a taxable category, sales tax may be collected.
If you see a sales tax amount shown in the checkout prior to committing to the purchase, remove the item from your cart and try to find a different listing in a different category to purchase instead.
