OVERCHARGED BY UPS
Summary: metacometcc expressed frustration over being charged an extra $30.30 by UPS, claiming the package was measured as 49 inches instead of the 48 entered into eBay’s system. They are confident in their measurements and verification process, noting this discrepancy is unfair, especially after an unsuccessful eBay appeal. golfingaddict explained that even a slight measurement over 48 inches could result in a higher charge, advising caution with the box dimensions when sending packages. metacometcc reiterated their dissatisfaction with UPS's practices.
I sold a golf shaft a couple of months ago and used the shipping calculator to
Determine costs. Entered was weight length, width and height. First and foremost I
Do not try to game the system or make extra money on shipping. I have been on eBay for 25 years and
I have 531 positive feedbacks and zero negatives.
Here is what happened. UPS said the length of the box was 49 inches and not the 48 I entered,
I am 100% sure the length I entered was correct. UPS charged me 30.30 more thru eBay in my option incorrectly. I appealed thru eBay which was denied. I use standard length golf boxes which are 48 inches.
I always verify box length and weight thru my local USPS office. This is an opportunity for Fed Ex and UPS to charge extra saying the length is off by an inch. It is ethically incorrect. I have no recourse according to EBay.
I have heard this happens often with the carriers.
Do I have any recourse. Thank You

Mentor2 weeks agoThe standard size on the box and the actual size on the box can vary.
Do you actually measure the box length or depend on what is printed on the box?
From Aug. 18, 2025: UPS will round up any fraction of an inch — even 0.1 inches — to the next whole inch for all three dimensions

OP2 weeks agoI measure the actual length of the box and then I take it to my local post office to verify my measurements. This is for every sale I make. IT was not a 49 inch box. I have never measured nor used a box at 49 inches long. I know that Fed ex and UPS will charge more for that

Mentor2 weeks agoNo, it is not "right" in the sense that $30 extra for less than an inch seems exorbitant.
It's difficult with a driver to get the box length less than 48 inches, but I would not send one without making sure that even with pressure, the length is under 48 inches.

Mentor2 weeks agoIf it was 48 and 1/16th of an inch it will round up to 49 inches.
Any pressure on the box could expand the closure end to the slightest part of an inch.
Not all standard "48" inch long boxes are 48" once you put something in them and tape them close
