Only received partial refund now can't balance refund?
I received an item not as described, it is non functional. I contacted the seller who sent me only a partial refund. Seller is no longer responding to my messages for the balance and ebay won't allow me to ask for a refund as a refund was already sent. I tried calling to speak with an agent without success. help?

AFAIK ... a seller can only 'offer' a partial refund. They can't just 'send' it. The buyer must accept it for the case to close.
Can I assume that you still have the item ... and would you mind telling us the cost of the item and how much of a refund was sent? That will help us figure out what other options you have to obtain the remainder of the refund ... with the possible need to return the item to get it.

OP3 years agoI received the refund automatically, never having an option to accept or reject. The ebay system mistakingly understands it to be a full refund although it's not, thus preventing me from any further action.
The purchase cost was $42.01 ($12 for item, $24.53 shipping, $5.48 taxes), the refund was $22.08.
I do still have the item and contacted the seller three times since receiving it. The seller didn't respond the last 2 times after I got the partial refund.
I finally got around system to speak with someone from eBay (chose to open and account and be contacted by them). They couldn't open a case either because of the partial refund. The last option was to report a seller who is not complying with eBay rules. Waiting now to hear how this goes...

Thanks for the info. I'm still not sure what to make of the partial refund being sent without your agreement. Hopefully, more responders will have some ideas. 🤞

Mentor3 years agoHi @pasta-machine
Have you tried filing a return for Not as described - does not match pictures or description? That is the best approach and does not require that a Buyer be in contact with the Seller through that process. The return process can be initiated via the item in a Buyer's Purchase history.

OP3 years agoIf I select Return Item in the drop down options of my purchase history, I receive the message "You can't open a return for this item," and "The seller already gave you a full refund," and "You can't open a return for this item
The seller already gave you a full refund. See details." If I click on see details, it's clear that the refund was only partial and that the order total is still positive. I'm stuck in a circle trying to get the remaining refund...

Sadly, a lot of eBay's processes are automated, I mean they have around 1.7 BILLION items listed on their site. It might be best at this point that you try and contact eBay directly to work out the remainder of your refund.
Use the Help & Contact link on the eBay page, go through the reason selection process and if the option to "Have us call you" appears over on the left where the Chat link is then try that first. Phone support is not always available sorry to say.
