Offers sent through messaging instead of listing
I have an item setup as Buy It Now with a Best Offer option.
I've only had offers sent through messages and they never attempt to put an offer in the listing instead.
The potential buyer almost always wants my bottom line selling price, but isn't that how the Best Offer listing format works? You put in a bid or offer as directed in the listing as eBay intends, right?!
Just a quicky, but I have one of only 5 of the particular item listed on eBay (in the high hundreds). My item is the lowest priced of all 5 so it just seems to me these 'buyers' are only hitting me up because I have the lowest price & I believe they think they can try to get me down even lower. But I don't exactly know why they won't attempt to put in an offer thru the listing?!
The buyer doesn't know your lowest price or price limit so telling them my lowest amount would undermine eBay's policy (or the listing format), correct?
It seems legal if a potential buyer suggests a lower amount to a seller thru messages even if they have it listed as BIN, so I believe these folks making offers thru messaging seem legal, but I still think eBay would want them to conduct business thru the listing as required.
Thank you!

Mentor8 months agoIt does seem odd that they don't make regular offers. In those cases, they may be trying to open a dialog with you and will eventually ask you to take the sale off eBay some way. (such as contacting them through social media) That is generally a sign that they are trying to take advantage of you. (scam)
I would not respond with negotiation, rather, I would direct them to the listing that has best offer available and tell them that you will be happy to review their offers.
