not getting paid for an item that was bid on
how can people win a bid and then never pay for the item. And then ebay cancels the transaction. Are there no penalties to the person.

·1 year agoeBay cancels for non-payment IF you have set up your Preferences for items awaiting payment to instruct eBay to do so after x days.
The sanctions for a cancellation for non-payment (after 4 calendar days from the transaction or the most recent invoice sent) are the same as they were under the old Unpaid Item Dispute: a "strike" (though eBay no longer uses that term) that counts towards the Buyer Requirement a seller can set to block anyone with 2 or more strikes in the previous 12 months (or less), protection from bad feedback (impossible to leave after the strike, can be removed--if not automatic--if posted before), and it affects the buyer's general buying limits.

Mentor1 year agoYou just need to update yourself on the policies. Ebay sends out notices every few months called Seller Updates. I would encourage you to not skip reading those as there is often important information in there.
Awhile back Ebay gave sellers the ability to Cancel a transaction for NON payment 96 hours after the purchase if no payment arrives. That puts an unpaid strike on that buyer's account.
You can set your preferences for your Buyer Requirements to the strictest possible which is 2 unpaid strikes in the past 12 months.

This is a log that shows buyers who are trying to bid but are declined. Mine right now has 25 entries. One person tried to bid 25 times on an item but was declined due to too many unpaid item strikes. This buyer has over 1300 feedback, so it is not a new buyer.

Mentor1 year agoYou cancel the transaction, not eBay. You can do that after 4 days of non-payment. When you do, the buyer gets a non-payment strike; 2 of those in a year will keep them from bidding/making offers for a year. There are penalties.
