nonresponsive buyer
A guy paid for a vintage treadle sewing machine I had up on eBay; he said he'd pick it up from me in Chicago on October 22. He never showed. I have written to him through eBay at least three times to learn what his plans are. Having heard nothing, I sent him an email today asking whether he wanted a refund. In the meantime, of course, the listing has been taken down and a second buyer who was interested has not been able to buy the machine. I have it in a storage unit and am, of course, continuing to pay storage on it. The whole situation puts me in a really bad position. I would like to refund him some of his money but can I reduce the amount by the storage I've paid in the meantime? What is the proper procedure? It makes me angry that he's imposed on me to the extent he has, frankly, and I think I should be paid for the time it has not been on the market while I've been waiting to hear from him. I actually have the intuition he's having buyers' remorse and is probably willing to let the money go, but it is nearly $400, which seems like a lot to lose just because he changed his mind and can't be upfront about it.

I would contact the buyer and let them know that you will be refunding their money on 11-10 if they don’t arrange for a pickup before then. [You can explain that you’re paying storage fees on the item.]
I don’t believe you’re allowed to deduct money from the refund if that wasn’t stated in the listing before the buyer paid.
