No longer accepting American Express is the worst decision eBay has ever made ...
This is pure corporate greed at work and totally unacceptable. Basically, eBay is blackmailing / strong arming everyone into using other types of cards because they couldn't negotiate "more favorable" terms (i.e., good for eBay bad for Amex) . I will now try to avoid eBay whenever possible because my Amex card generates cash in an investment account that I use to fund my IRA every year.

To save their members money eBay has decided not to pay those high rates anymore

Why not just choose AMEX as your funding source in PayPal and choose PayPal at checkout?

OP2 years agoThat’s the ideal temporary workaround, but if you encounter any problems with an order, it can get very tricky obtaining a resolution from Amex because it technically went through PayPal and the purchase is coded PayPal.
You always have to remember who you contact first, or you can inadvertently forfeit Amex’s generally better customer service and refund-inquiry investigations.

You're still paying with AMEX, PayPal is just the payment processor. Just like eBay is when you pay with AMEX today. You don't lose any protection.
I've used my AMEX card for all my eBay purchases for the past 20 years, paying through PayPal, so nothing will change for me.
Since I buy from reputable sellers though, it's not really an issue for me. I've only had to return one item in all those years, and it was taken care of quickly through eBay's Money Back Guarantee.
