Newbie Seller charged 3X buyer's shipping cost? UPS Ground selected
Hello, I recently sold my first item in over 10 years and I am having trouble with eBay's shipping charges. I sold a BIN item and had selected UPS Ground as the shipper when I set up the listing, I entered size and weight (3lbs) when I made the listing and it came to $6.99. But when it sold, eBay charged me $21.14 for shipping? Did I miss something? My itemized shipping invoice cited the $21.14 as "postage"? I've already printed the label and shipped my item to the buyer, so I'm guessing I'm just SOL on the balance [$14.15]? I have another listing ending tomorrow and want to avoid a similar situation ... help!

Did you ship UPS or USPS? Is it possible you sent it priority mail instead of UPS? How large was the box?
Check your label here - https://www.ebay.com/ship/labels/my-ebay

OP2 years agoThanks Wooden Flower! I think I figured out my problem ... looking at the buyer's address on Google, I found it is a rural address, despite having a street and town listed. A UPS agent tells me rural delivery makes the cost go up, way up, and that's evidently what happened here. I don't see away around getting surprised like this as you don't know the buyer's address until the sale has been completed. A definite pothole and I fell in it. I could have shipped USPS if I'd known ahead of time I suppose. I had a BIN item and received two offers below asking price, I went with the higher offer of the two but the extra shipping probably cost me more than the difference, without seeing their shipping addresses to compare before hand, there was no way for me to know. Have you ever had shipping costs jump due to rural delivery?

Yes, UPS has a surcharge for rural delivery since they probably have to make a special trip. I don’t use UPS very often, so I don’t how to avoid having to pay more than the buyer paid in this situation.
Unless the package is large or heavy, usps ground is usually the best choice. It never hurts to compare the services when you buy your label, but if you're going to change it, make sure the buyer is OK with the change. Some buyers have strong feelings about ups or usps.
