New Payment Policies
My question is this. How many people are going to continue to use eBay given their new policy that requires that you give them direct access to your PayPal account or one of your credit card accounts in order to make payments on your behalf? I have been a member since June of 1999, but I won't do it. I guess I am done.

OP3 years agoIn over 600 transactions I have never encountered this. I know that is a small number given the total transactions for the time frame, but I still conclude that few if any sellers opted for this. If now this is imposed automatically unless the seller makes the effort to opt out, I see many bidders being discouraged from making the effort to review, compare and decide to bid, not knowing whether they will be permitted to do so without granting automatic payment authority over the bidder's accounts. I am not going to unnecessarily add one more place to the list of those places where my financial information can be exposed by a breach.

Mentor3 years agoAre you talking about paying for postage or what? You can have payments made from available funds in your ebay account, and if not enough, rather than automatic set it to have you manually sign into PayPal each time to pay them.

OP3 years agoI tried to bid on an item. A dialogue box popped up that seemed to offer me the option of setting a default payment method of either PayPal or a credit card account. When I closed the box with the "x" in the corner it closed the box and took me back to the item listing (not allowing the bid). This occurred repeatedly, whether I used the "X" in the corner or the cancel button at the bottom of the box. It would not allow a bid unless I proceeded with the selection of a default payment method giving eBay the authority to make the payment directly to the seller. I am not willing to give eBay direct authority over my PayPal account to make payments on my behalf.

You do it after you win an auction and pay?
Sellers are tired of buyers making offers and winning auctions and not paying, so Ebay finally decided to do something about it.

Mentor3 years agoThe option for buyers to select a payment method before bidding or making any offer is something the seller can turn on or off. This prevents buyers that may not pay to be blocked, so most sellers have this turned on.

·3 years agoIt appears to be turned on by default (the one for Best Offers was, and the new one for bids was already on in my Buyer Requirements page when I first saw it today).  Sellers have to opt out, not in.

Mentor3 years agoYes, now it appears to default on, but in the past when first offered, the default was off and the seller had to turn it on.
