Need help with a return that never arrived. Ebay is going to refund the customer? Seriously?

A return has apparently gotten lost by the USPS. Tracking shows it hasn't moved in over a week: "Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way." My experience has been that every time this has happened (at least since USPS switched First Class to Ground Advantage) these situations have always ended up with the package being lost forever. It's an item valued at about $40.

Return Reason: Ordered by mistake

The return details say:

"The item's been delivered

Now that the item has been returned, please refund the buyer."

And it says if I don't refund the buyer by March 1st, ebay will refund the buyer.

How can they say the item has been returned if the tracking says otherwise?

Does the tracking show it has been delivered back to you? If not, I would take the tracking number down to the post office and have them double check on their GPS system.
