Need help understanding UPS Charge for Package "Under estimate"
Summary: unclemikeysattic is experiencing an issue with UPS over a charge for an incorrect weight declaration on a shipped baseball bat. They insist that the declared weight was correct and are confused by the overage fee, especially since they have shipped similar items without problems in the past. Various participants suggest potential issues like tube surcharges and dimensional weight charges that might be causing the discrepancy. UPS directed unclemikeysattic to resolve the issue with eBay, while eBay's customer support has been difficult to reach. comics-scifi-collectibles advises using social media to contact eBay support for resolution.
I shipped a baseball bat last week, and this morning I received a message that said I was being charge for not declaring the correct weight.
Here is the label. I paid for a 4lbs package

Here is the message I recieved

I don't understand what UPS is trying to say? I declared the bat at 4 pounds. (Even if I typed in 3.38lbs, which I didn't, I always round up and the label says 4Lbs). It says Billable weight by carrier 4lbs. I paid for 4lbs. Are they trying to say the total weight was 8lbs?
The crazy part is the bat has its dimensions stamped on it........The bat was a 28oz bat... 34 inches long.......the dimensions I put in are correct on the label...

I tried to file with UPS but I can't even find a place to dispute overages, it takes me to a section on their site about INVOICE disputes and asks for numbers I don't have. I did fill something out and attached all these photos but didn't seem like the correct place. Tried to call and was on hold for 20 mins. and had to go back to work. Seems like other people have tried to do this and its tricky because UPS wants you to have an account with them and I buy my label through eBay.
Went through all the ebay automated things, got someone to call me, I don't think they even remotely understood what I was talking about after I explained it about 3 times....
Main issue is I sell bats all the time, I ship them in cardboard tubes. I haven't had this happen before but between getting this overage after mailing this one, I've sent out two others ones and I can't afford to get overage charges like this.
Does anybody understand why I was charged this?
Am I missing something?
Anybody know how to dispute this other than what I have already tried?

Mentor3 weeks ago@unclemikeysattic This sounds like a dimensional weight surcharge or a surcharge for shipping in a tube. I know you said that it was not applied in the past but it normally does apply for tubes.
Keep in mind that the dimensions printed on a box are for the OUTSIDE.
Only eBay customer service can file a dispute since they are the UPS customer. I recommend contacting CS on social media to ask them to do this. Keep in mind that UPS does sometimes add incorrect surcharges but there are CORRECT surcharges that you can read about on the UPS website.
Personally if I have an item that is too large or heavy to ship via USPS then I use UPS and buy the label from Pirateship. Pirateship helps with insurance claims and surcharge disputes. UPS does have a list of valid surcharges on their website too. UPS does not add surcharges as often as Fed Ex does.
Social media is the best way to contact customer service for this issue.
Here's how to contact eBay general customer service. ( I feel that it's ok to use this option since it does affect your bottom line.)
Click this link> https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/getting-paid/getting-paid-items-youve-sold?id=4814
Then Type PAYOUT In the chat bot box on the lower right.
Then AGENT after the bot responds. You might have to repeat those steps.
Or you can also contact customer service by sending a PRIVATE message on social media. Customer service verifies your identity before responding.

Can you explain the process to appeal a UPS upcharge to OP here?

Mentor3 weeks agoThe 2x36x2 dimensions. Was the bat was only 2 inches wide packed?
unclemikeysattic
OP3 weeks agoYes. It was a tube that the bat slides into.

OP3 weeks agoMy understanding with the circular tube is to measure each side like a square box. The tube was 4inch in diameter so it was about 2 and 2
I thought of that earlier and went into the shipping calculator and even with a dimension change of 4 and 4 inches it didn't move the needle on the cost. At 5 and 5 it bumped it $1.50 but no where near 15 dollars.

Mentor3 weeks agoI would imagine that the problem is two fold. First, a tube is considered by shipping carriers as an irregular package so there will be a surcharge for tubes. Second, shipping carriers have surcharges for long packaging. Since your package was 36 inches long it most likely had a double surcharge applied.

OP3 weeks agoI've shipped probably 25+ bats in the same tube containers. It's just a cardboard tube like you put a poster in. I've never had this issue.

OP3 weeks agoI also just got this message from UPS
Thank you for contacting us regarding the weight correction charge for one of your packages. I understand how frustrating this situation can be, especially when you carefully entered the shipment weight and the label clearly shows 4 lbs. I'd be more than happy to verify the information further.
Upon reviewing the information you provided, it appears that the weight correction notification was issued through eBay. Since the shipping label was purchased through the eBay shipping platform, eBay manages the billing and any adjustments that are applied to shipments purchased through their system, and we are unable to review or dispute charges that are billed directly through eBay. For this reason, I kindly recommend contacting eBay Customer Support directly.
eBay will be able to review the adjustment details, explain how the correction was calculated, and determine whether any billing correction is warranted, since they have billed for the additional charge.
You can use this email as backup for your dispute with them, since we will not be able to disclose or process any type of adjustment without this information.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to let me know, and I’ll be happy to assist you.
I tried to go through the chat to get someone to call me AGAIN.... and now it says nobody is available. I don't understand why eBay would be adjusting a package?

A 4" diameter tube is measured as 4"x4"
None of the carriers want tubes anymore. They want rectangles or triangles but not tubes. Tubes don't do well on conveyor belts so the carriers have all added surcharges for tubes.
unclemikeysattic
OP2 weeks agoYa, but I covered that in the previous post. Even when you adjust the dimensions to 4x4 it doesn't move the needle. The price stays the same. at 5x5 it moves it $1. Plus none of the price increase says anything about dimension size and says weight.
I've shipped in these tubes for a long while. I work across from a graphics print shop and they have piles of them they just give me. I've shipped two other bats this month with zero adjustment.
UPS tells me its Ebay that is doing it, Ebay social media response says I have to talk to UPS...... getting hosed out of $15 bucks is annoying but trying to get someone to understand what I am even saying seems to be even harder.

I know it's frustrating, but that free tube will cost you $15 surcharge at times. Maybe not every time. You have to decide is it worth buying or sourcing other boxes.
