Navigating Post-Purchase Disputes: Fairness and Best Practices
Summary: tshgolf shared a situation where a buyer misused a custom product for over 120 days before initiating a payment dispute, claiming it didn't match the description. This is challenging since it falls outside the 90-day window to report as abuse. rfmtm mentioned that disputes are typically not allowed after 30 days on eBay and questioned if the buyer went through the payment processor. disneyshopper suggested the buyer might be filing a chargeback and noted that such claims should ideally be made within 30 days, implying skepticism about the buyer's actions. The discussion focused on strategies for sellers to handle long-term disputes fairly.
Hi everyone,
I recently encountered a challenging situation that I believe many sellers might face at some point. A buyer used a custom-made product for over 120 days before it broke due to their admitted misuse. Now, they’ve initiated a payment dispute, claiming the product didn't match the description, despite having used it for months. This seems unfair to me as the seller, especially since I can't report them as an abusive buyer because it's past the 90-day window.
I'm curious, how should sellers protect themselves and handle similar scenarios? What best practices can be put in place to ensure fairness in disputes initiated long after a purchase? Have any of you experienced something similar, and how did you resolve it?
Your insights and experiences would be incredibly valuable as we navigate the complexities of post-purchase disputes.

If you have access to the Order Receipt from the Get Packing Slip menu use that in your appeal. Otherwise use order details.

Mentor1 month agoIt sounds like the buyer went to his funding source and is filing a chargeback. After 120 days of use, and claiming the item is not as described, would raise eyebrows I would think. I would definitely point that out. If the item truly was not as described, they should have filed a case within the first 30 days.
