My Returned Package was Allegedly Stolen -- eBay Refuses to Help
I recently sold a brand new unopened Pixel 7 Pro. The buyer claimed it was faulty and wanted to return it and receive a refund. Okay no big deal, I thought to myself. I’ll get it back and send it to Google for a working one.
I’m pretty obsessive about tracking my packages, so once I received the tracking info, I’d refresh constantly for updates. Within 5 minutes of the alleged delivery, I checked my mail box and vestibule and it was not there. I contacted eBay immediately to make them aware I hadn’t received the item and after a back and forth reviewing the case and appeal they said there was nothing they can do since there was proof of tracking information which says it’s been delivered and I must refund the money.
I contacted the USPS who says it must have been stolen. I filed a police report and a USPS stolen package form with the police case number.
So now I am out the brand new phone and the sale amount. Is there anything I can do now that I’ve filed those reports? I don’t understand how I got **bleep**ed and eBay won’t do anything? If anyone can provide clarity or past experiences that you think might help, I’d greatly appreciate it!

OP3 years agoI understand that which is why I went to the police and the USPS. It just is infuriating that there is absolutely no protection for me in this situation when there are many guarantees for buyers. It is also infuriating that the shipment was only insured up $100. So in the event I get anything out of this, which is incredibly unlikely, it would be $800 less than the value of the device.
Separately, how am I to know the buyer shipped the item back? Just because he bought postage and shipped *something*? Why does eBay take that as proof that the device was shipped back? The whole thing stinks of a scam to be perfectly honest.

If you did not supply the return label, return to USPS and ask if the delivery location for that tracking number matches your address. If it does, then it was stolen after delivery, and it's between you and the police.
If the address shown on tracking was not your address, request a letter from USPS to that effect. If tracking is not even in your zip code, you can won't need the letter. This is called the "tracking number scam".

If the return case is still open, add your USPS letter to the return (or state that the item was not returned to your zip) and ask eBay to step in.
Otherwise, scroll to the bottom of the page linked above, click the "Contact Us" button and type "agent" into the chat that opens. Let the agent know that your buyer used the "tracking number scam" instead of returning the item.

·3 years agoIf your mail is stolen this is a job for the police and the Post office. There is nothing that eBay can do.
