My account was blocked, saying it was a new location. It wasn't. What's happening?
When I tried to login--and I've logged in successfully from the same computer a dozen times over the last few weeks--I received a warning that my account needed verification. I was instructed to phone 866-643-1607 and provide the 11-digit code shown on-screen.
I did that, and I was finally connected a rep who informed me that my account was blocked for security reasons and that the only way to unblock it was to provide the email address associated with the account PRIOR to the current one.
I was lucky to GUESS that it was the email I used at my former employer.
However, I think the representative MUST have been misinformed; SURELY, there must be ANOTHER way to remove a block that DOES NOT REQUIRE RECALLING INFORMATION MORE THAN 20 YEARS OLD.
The same rep went on to suggest that it would have been my fault for not keeping my "security question up-to-date," and that I should deal with that immediately.
I tried, but no such security question exists (although I was informed by another rep from a second call that former email addresses associated with the account are NOT security questions at all but PERMANENT records attached and NOT EDITABLE).
There are, in fact, NO SECURITY QUESTIONS to set up for the account. The second rep suggested that I should obtain a mobile phone for the purposes of ebay verification. The same rep also explained that I could edit my phone information in AcctSettings->PersonalInfo to make clear that it was a Landline, after which ebay verifications would proceed using that plain-telephone technology. I found that setting already made.
So what's going on?
1. Why is ebay challenging my login from-the-same-location-as-the-days-before?
2. Why can't the challenge be to call my registered landline with a numerical code to answer the challenge?
