Maximum bid on an item
I place a maximum bid on an item of $106.77, someone else went up to $79.00 and stopped, ebay has charged me the $106.77 plus shipping. I thought ebay would go to one step higher than the $79.00. What happened.

Generally, if you wind up paying your maximum bid amount it was either because your bid amount met a reserve, or someone else bid within an increment of your maximum.
Otherwise, the high bidder should pay up to one bid increment over the next highest bidder's maximum bid, or the reserve amount (if there is one) if the high bidder was the only bid at or above the reserve.
