Managing Shipping Costs and Seller Responsibility on eBay
Summary: coryjames209 raised concerns about discrepancies between estimated and actual shipping costs on eBay, seeking advice on handling such situations. They shared an experience of refunding a buyer due to these issues. mr_lincoln advised against using AI for specific transaction queries, emphasizing accurate item measurements and dimensions to avoid errors. monroe67 questioned the necessity of refunding the buyer and highlighted potential consequences, such as defects on the seller's record, if the refund was due to profit margins rather than legitimate transaction issues.
Shipping costs can often present unexpected challenges for sellers, especially when discrepancies arise between estimated and actual weights. If you've encountered a situation where eBay's calculated shipping didn't match the actual expense, leading to losses, how did you handle it?
Here are a few questions to consider:
Who do you believe should be responsible for discrepancies in shipping calculations?
Have you ever had to adjust shipping strategies to avoid such issues?
What advice would you give to new sellers to prevent losses due to miscalculated shipping?
Have you found any tools or strategies that help in accurately estimating shipping costs ahead of time?
Feel free to share your experiences and insights!

Mentor3 weeks agoHi @coryjames209
In the future do NOT use AI to ask questions about a specific issue on a transaction. Just ask the question or explain the situation. We see many mistakes that Sellers make in the area of shipping. They do not weigh their items properly and do not put accurate dimensions in the shipping section of their listings. eBay is not to blame, the Seller is ultimately responsible for what is on their listing. /relly sorry you are learning that kind of a lesson.

Mentor3 weeks agoSo -- you chose to refund your buyer. You did not have to refund your buyer.
What did you tell your buyer about "the issue"?
Moreover, what was the "reason" you selected from the options that eBay gave you?
Was "the issue" that you wouldn't make as much profit as you (somehow) thought you would? Or should?
eBay does not consider that a valid reason to cancel a transaction and refund a buyer.
If that's what you did, eBay will give you a Defect on your selling record.
