Question

Instead of making an offer the potential buyer asked: "​Since you have the 'Make an Offer' option enabled, I wanted to reach out and ask what your best final price would be to close the deal right away. I want to respect your time and avoid any long back-and-forth negotiations, so I'm ready to make a serious and fair offer." Is this "legal" eBay and allowed? Thanks.

I am trying to understand eBay's response.

In part: "You can respond by sending a custom offer through eBay messaging. This offer must be lower than the Buy It Now price and keeps the transaction covered by eBay's seller protection policy."

So, does this mean that a seller can send a potential customer an offer through eBay messaging, but only if the item is listed as "Buy It Now?"

I am still confused.

I just got this response from eBay:

"It is allowed for a potential buyer to ask you what your best final price would be even if they do not make an official offer through the "make an offer" option.

You can respond by sending a custom offer through eBay messaging. This offer must be lower than the Buy It Now price and keeps the transaction covered by eBay's seller protection policy.

To send a custom offer:

Go to My eBay: Messages and find the buyer's message.
Select Send offer.
Change the offer price to the amount you and the buyer have discussed, ensuring it is lower than the item price.
Add any additional context in the comment field if needed; this will appear in the email sent to the buyer along with the offer.
Send the offer."

Offers cannot go through messages. They need to make an offer through the listing page.
