Lost insured package, USPS won't fully reimburse - will eBay help?
Hey fellow sellers, I ran into an issue I haven't had to deal with before, and I'd appreciate some feedback.
I shipped a crystal cordial set from Florida to Texas, insured for the value of the contents, $335. This is what the seller paid for the item.
The package was lost en route. USPS has photos of the package until Texas - then ONLY THE LABEL was delivered to the receiving post office! Totally crazy - someone would have had to remove the label with a box cutter of knife, as it was fully taped on. Naturally, I refunded the sad buyer.
I submitted a claim for the $335 with all the backup documentation (receipt, copy of invoice, comparable listings) through the online claim center, and they approved a refund - of $100! My first appeal was denied, and I'm waiting for a ruling on my second appeal (with the same backup paperwork as I submitted originally).
Sorry for the long sob story, but my question is, does eBay offer any type of help in dealing with these matters?

Mentor6 months agoWhen you added the extra insurance did you go through the USPS or the other insurance company that is available when you check out?

Mentor6 months agoWhen the item is more than $100, ebay offers extra insurance using the USPS and a third party as well. I have only paid for extra insurance just in case the package is lost because I didn't want to be responsible for covering an extra $200 if that happened.

OP6 months agoI purchased $335 insurance when purchasing the postage, not because I was afraid the package would get lost, but because the crystal was so fragile I was concerned it wouldn't reach the buyer intact.

Shipping labels include $100 of insurance coverage. If you want full coverage, you must pay to add more insurance to your shipment.
Did you add more insurance? This is an option when you buy your label. If you did not increase the coverage, the balance of the loss is yours.

OP6 months agoI did add more insurance, but I assumed what I was buying was USPS insurance. I believe the line item says, "Additional liability insurance" but does not specify.
I have filed a claim with eBay for reimbursement; we'll see what happens!

If there was a link to submit a claim to eBay insurance (ShipCover), then you must have bought their insurance instead of USPS.
I haven't added insurance in quite a while, but I'm sure they put the ShipCover option first 🙂
