Local Pickup
I bought a 2024 iMac computer from a seller on eBay. Originally he extended an offer based on the fact that I was either watching this item or had it in my cart for $750. I even contacted him directly to indicate my interest. This was two to three weeks ago. On Saturday, I had reached out asking him to extend the same offer because he escalated the asking price to $900. Yesterday, I was able to purchase this item, and wrote him a note asking to indicate a date and time for pickup. I also told him where I could meet him. He replied stating he was repacking the item (it’s open box which I believe it’s supposed to never have been used and like new). I have not seen him in person to pick up my iMac, yet he asked for the 6 digit pick up code. I would like to pick this item up as soon as possible, and will give him until the end of tomorrow to respond. I just wanted to reach out to the community for any thoughts on this matter.

I hope you did NOT give the Seller the 6-digit code until you actually do the pick-up. That code tells eBay the pick-up part of the transaction was complete.
On Local-pick transactions Buyers and Sellers can exchange contact info like phone number, email address, pick up address, etc. to facilitate setting up the day, time and location of the pick-up.
If you did not give them the code and they ghost you after 7 days (if memory serves) you can file a claim that you did not receive your item. Follow the steps in the claim and it will lead to a refund.

OP5 months agoThanks for following up with me, Mr. Lincoln. There’s something that felt off when he asked for the pickup code, and when he asked, eBay was kind enough to put a reminder not to give the code ahead of meeting this person and I had the item I purchased in my possession. I did not give him my code. This seller is new to eBay, and there is minimal chance that he did not know that he is not taking next steps in this transaction properly. Thanks again for your reply as the information you provided is useful.

You are more than welcome. New Sellers have their funds held for up to 31 days regardless of delivery status or pick-up status of a transaction. However, that particular fact is often not known until they start to sell things.
Scammers will sometimes have a very low Feedback account that was recently opened and would KNOW if they get the code before the pick-up they can make it harder for Buyers to get a refund once they ghost the customer.
