Has anyone noticed that the listing count is being miscounted. For example I listed three items last night and ebay says I listed eight.

It doesn’t say you have listed 8 new items - it says you have used 8 of your free insertions.
You have 500+ items listed. Each fixed price item uses one of your insertions each month when it renews, unless it sells before it hits its monthly anniversary date. Once you use up your 250 free insertions, you will pay $.35 each.
If you plan to keep that many active items, you should consider a basic store for $28 per month. It only takes paying for 80 insertions to make the store a money saver, plus you pay lower final value fees in most categories.
