Last second bidding
I was outbid (by $1) with eBay recording the winning bid time of 1:08:34 for an auction that ended at 1:10:00. Despite careful, continuous monitoring, refreshing my screen every few seconds, I never saw the bid being placed nor had a chance to compete against the winning bidder, who placed only one bid--the winning bid. I am confident that I refreshed within the 1 minute 26 second window that was supposed to be left after that bid was placed. IS LAST-SECOND BIDDING IN THIS MANNER POSSIBLE OR DID THIS BIDDER SOMEHOW GAME THE SYSTEM??

Bids can be placed at any time during the auction...from the 1st second to the last second. The winning bidder did not "game the system".
Highest bid wins, not the latest.
Always make sure to bid the very most you would be willing to spend on the item so you would have no regrets about not being able to bid again.

OP1 year agoIf no "gaming the system" was involved, why wait to place the sole bid (and presumably an associated max) until there is only 1 minute 26 seconds left in the auction? It is obvious this bidder was attempting to prevent a competing bid, and won the item for less than it could have been sold for.

Some bidders choose to wait to place their bids at the last seconds of the auction, perfectly ok.
As stated, highest bid wins.
When I place a bid in an auction, I choose an amount that is the MOST I want to spend on the item. That way, I have no regrets if I am outbid, since it just means someone else was willing to spend more than I was.
EDITED TO ADD: The only way to "prevent a competing bid" is to bid higher than all the other bidders. That can be done at any time during the auction.
