Many veteran bidders suggest deciding the maximum you are willing to pay (taking into account shipping and any taxes), adding a few odd cents to avoid a round number, and then bidding that amount once, as late in the auction as you are comfortable with. If you do that, the only way you can lose is if another bidder is willing to pay more.
