Just De-FREEed all my listings

We know 'buyers like free shipping,' 'don't want to pay more for shipping than for the item' and they'll click on free shipping prior to pay shipping...but we sellers are getting killed. I try to keep up with changes, I thought I switch to variable shipping charge where needed, but I'm getting orders from Alaska, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands and paying people to take my goods! So I went through 100 listings to remove all free shipping and confirm variable, and lowered prices to compensate. It'd be much cleaner if shipping (and ability to edit) was tabulated on the first screen, instead of drilling down on each item to see shipping status.
