OP6 months agoI figured ebay would withhold the funds until I receive the item and approve it, the same way they hold funds when you sell an item

Unfortunately, no - when you click refund now the assumption is that you do not want the item returned.

Send the buyer a message - explain that you would like the item returned and id not realize that your refund would close their return request. Tell them you would like to send them a return shipping label.
If they respond positively, buy a return label at pirateship.com - print it to a jpeg file, then send the jpeg to the buyer in an eBay message.
eBay can’t force them to return the item, but most people will help, as long as they haven’t already disposed of the item. Still, be as polite as can be, asking for their help.

OP1 year agoI have sent him 3 messages and have not gotten a response. The item was a very valuable coin so he would not have disposed of it. I’m trying to be patient but it’s been 2 weeks with no response

I’m sorry that your buyer is not responding.
There is no other way to get your item returned.

OP1 year agoWell I shipped the item so I have all of his information. So I have other options, just trying to resolve it the best way. eBay will not even respond to emails I’ve sent them. I will no longer be using their services. This is ridiculous that I have to go through all this after being reasonable about the buyers request

If it is a pricey item, you could certainly try small claims court. Since you issued the refund voluntarily, your buyer has not broken any laws - you gave him a gift.
As @golfingaddict described, you never refund before the return is received.

There is nothing you can do at this point. You voluntarily gave a refund.
It is too bad you refunded so quickly.
