Item damaged in shipping, insured, being returned NOT AS DESCRIBED
What is going on? 23 year member-I must have been asleep. I shipped an item in the original factory container and insured it. Shipping was as much as item cost. Buyer says it was damaged no obvious damage to box. I told them to take it to shipper and request insurance coverage because the cost to return it to me along with the refund would leave me in a hole even if the shipper refunds me the entire sale cost. Ebay says send them a shipping label and after return refund the sale along with original shipping. What?

That's correct. You can refund without a return or you can pay for the return and refund when the item comes back. THEN you can deal with insurance on your end.
Ask the buyer for photos of the damage to the item and all the packaging and just refund if you don't want to pay for return shipping. You'll need the photos for your insurance claim. You can open a claim online here:
